Sea Life

The Isle of Skye, located on the west coast of Scotland, offers a diverse range of marine wildlife due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding Inner Hebrides.

Grey Seals, The waters around Skye are home to a significant population of grey seals. They can often be seen lounging on rocky shores or swimming in the coastal waters just off the shore in Loch Dunvegan.

Common dolphins and harbour porpoises are frequently spotted in the waters around Skye. They are known to follow boats, so you may have a chance to see them during a boat tour or from the coastline. Portree has a number of boat trips available.

Atlantic Puffins, These adorable seabirds can be found on Skye's cliffs and sea stacks, particularly in the north of the island. The best time to spot them is during the breeding season, from April to August.

Minke Whales, These magnificent creatures are the most common species of whales found in the waters off Skye. Minke whales are known for their curious nature and often approach boats, offering excellent opportunities for sightings.

Basking Sharks, The summer months bring basking sharks to the waters surrounding Skye. These gentle giants are the second-largest fish in the world and are often seen near the surface around Neist Point, filter-feeding on plankton.

Otters, Skye is a great place to spot otters, both on land and in the water. They can be found in coastal areas, rocky shores, and around freshwater lochs, particularly during low tide.

Sea Birds, In addition to puffins, Skye is home to various other sea birds, including guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, and kittiwakes. They nest on the cliffs and provide a spectacular sight, especially during the breeding season.
