artist Charles Macqueen

Charles MacQueen is a celebrated Scottish artist known for his richly textured, atmospheric paintings that evoke the essence of place rather than depict it literally. Born in Glasgow in 1940, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and later taught art before dedicating himself fully to painting in the 1990s.

MacQueen’s work is deeply influenced by his travels to Morocco, Italy, France, and the Greek Islands. He uses layered paint, gesso, and mixed media to create compositions that shimmer with light and memory—often capturing glimpses of architecture, markets, and coastal scenes through abstracted forms.

He is a member of both the Royal Glasgow Institute and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, and his work is held in collections worldwide.
